Journey Description
This collection of twelve plant sound recordings invites you on a journey inward, from the outermost boundaries of your physical self to the deep, hidden processes that sustain your life moment by moment.
Beginning at the skin - the living boundary between you and the world - and moving through the senses, breath and circulation, deeper into the structural framework of bone and the quiet work of the organs, each track offers an opportunity to bring conscious awareness to a part of yourself that usually operates beyond attention.
The music is created through the direct sonification of native and wilded British plants, each one chosen for its long traditional and energetic connection to the organ or body system it represents. These are not compositions inspired by plants - the plants themselves are the musicians.
There is nothing you need to do but listen. You may find your awareness naturally drawn inward as the journey progresses, becoming more embodied, more present to the extraordinary complexity quietly at work within you.
Each track can be listened to individually as a focused meditation on a particular organ or body system, or the full collection can be experienced as a single unbroken inward journey.
Journey Tracks
Chickweed - Skin
At the threshold between self and world, the skin holds us, defines us, meets everything we encounter. Chickweed lives at its own threshold too, tender and persistent at the edges of gardens and pathways, offering its quiet cooling touch to whatever is inflamed or troubled at the surface.
Eyebright - Eyes
This small, bright-faced wildflower carries its purpose in its name. Found in open grassland where the light falls freely, eyebright invites us to pause at the windows through which we meet the world, and to consider what it truly means to see clearly.
Greater Plantain - Lungs
With every breath we participate in the world beyond our skin. Plantain, growing wherever feet have walked, has long been a companion to the lungs in their ceaseless, largely unconscious labour - the slow tidal exchange that connects our inner life to the living air around us.
Walnut - Brain
Split open a walnut and the resemblance is unmistakable - the folded, intricate kernel a quiet mirror of the organ that holds our thoughts, dreams and memories. A plant that invites us to rest within the extraordinary mystery of our own intelligence.
Hawthorn - Heart
Ancient guardian of the hedgerow, hawthorn has stood at boundaries and thresholds for as long as people have walked this land. Its connection to the heart runs deep - not only the physical heart that beats its faithful rhythm, but the heart as the seat of courage, tenderness and love.
Nettle - Blood
Few plants announce themselves as vividly as the nettle. Rich in iron, fierce with vitality, it has long been recognised as a builder and cleanser of the blood - that restless, living river that carries warmth and nourishment to every corner of our being.
Comfrey - Bones
Knitbone, the old healers called it. Comfrey speaks to the deep structural quiet of the skeleton, the framework we rarely think of until it falters. A plant rooted in the language of repair and resilience, it invites awareness of the foundation upon which everything else is built.
Spleenwort - Spleen
This delicate fern persists in the cracks of old walls and shaded rocky places, quiet and easily overlooked. The spleen too works largely in silence, tending the inner ecology of the body with an unhurried and largely invisible care. A track for the places in us that simply get on with it.
Milk Thistle - Liver
The liver works without rest, processing, filtering, transforming - one of the body's great alchemical organs. Milk thistle, with its distinctive white-veined leaves and long history as the liver's most faithful plant ally, offers a moment of recognition and gratitude for this tireless inner labour.
Mallow - Stomach
Soft-leaved and gently nourishing, mallow has long offered comfort to a troubled digestive system. The stomach is where we first begin to make the outer world our own, breaking down and transforming what we have taken in. A plant of quiet hospitality for the body's first place of change.
Meadowsweet - Gut
Sweet-scented along riverbanks and damp summer meadows, meadowsweet carries within it a complex and ancient chemistry. The gut too is far more than a simple passage - a world of extraordinary intelligence and sensitivity. This track is an invitation to listen to what stirs in our deepest interior.
Dandelion - Kidneys
And so the journey ends where the body's great filtration quietly happens, far from conscious attention. The dandelion, golden and ubiquitous and largely unregarded, has always known this territory. A plant that asks us to find value in what is overlooked, and to honour the hidden work that sustains everything.
